Kota Kinabalu: Construction work on the Penampang Sports Complex to allow floodlighting is anticipated to be completed in February next year.
A Sports Ministry source said the project is expected to be completed within 12 months, on February 12, 2024, having begun on February 13 this year.
ADVERTISEMENT While assuring that the facility will be opened as scheduled, the source said standard operating procedures would be followed throughout the project to guarantee the facility’s safety before it is opened to the public.
He also said that Padang B is available for the public to use and there is an alternative track the public can use for training in Penampang, namely the SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin field.
The clarification was made in response to a Penampang resident who posted a YouTube video and asked why the sports facility was closed until now.
The resident demanded an explanation in his post, saying, “This is the only sports and training facility available in Penampang and yet it was closed all through the year of 2023.”

He brought up the fact that many are dissatisfied with the current state of affairs.
Recently, a video clip purportedly depicting children being forced to practice on Penampang’s streets also went viral on social media.

The message accompanying the video claimed that because the Sports Complex was closed to the public, that particular stretch was the only asphalt road where youngsters could train conveniently.
During the State Legislative Assembly in May, concerns were also expressed over the delay in the Penampang Stadium upgrades.
The facilities at the Penampang Sports Complex are being constructed and upgraded, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin was quoted as saying.
He acknowledged that getting the necessary equipment was taking longer than expected but that work is still being done.
