More than 600 expected for cycling race
Kota Kinabalu: More than 600 riders are expected to take part in the 6th Kota Kinabalu Century Cycling Race scheduled to be held here on Sunday (November 18) with the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex car park as the starting point. The annual event with a total prize money of RM13,950 organised by Cycling Association Kota Kinabalu (CAKK) is becoming more international this year with most of the foreign riders from Brunei alone.

CAKK President Eric Ye in a press conference held on Monday said with the overwhelming response from foreign entries, they had to meet up with the relevant authority in Putra Jaya to get the necessary green light.

"The race which started with a humble beginning six years ago has since attracted a lot of overseas interest and we are aiming to turn it into an international event eventually.

"This year, we have received many foreign entries with the majority of the 200 received coming from Brunei, and with the huge numbers, we had to meet up with the Federal Sports Ministry officials to get their permission." he said.

CAKK secretary Patrick Wong who went for the meeting said he was interviewed and had to give a presentation of the event before they receive the letter of approval signed by Minister of Youth and Sports Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

Meanwhile, Patrick said nine categories will be staged on the day with the road event for elite men and women open, men veteran 40 above and junior boys 13-18 year-old as well as MTB event for elite men and women open, veteran for men and women 40 above, and junior boys 13-18.

It will cover a distance of 120 kilometres for all the road categories with the exception of the juniors, where they have to ride 95km, the same distance as the MTB men open and veteran men while 75km for the MTB women open, junior boys and women veteran.

"The route is along Likas Coastal road to Sepanggar road towards Senrusop and Topokon, Tuaran and the riders will get to experience and enjoy the scenic coastal areas during the ride," said Patrick.

He disclosed that they have invited Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal for the VIP ride from the starting point to the Sabah State Administrative Centre and back .

"We also hope the public will use alternate routes to avoid traffic congestion during the time."

The participants are also urged to come on Saturday (November 17) for registration and collection of goodies at the Damai Community Hall from 10am-2pm. – GL Oh
