Golden haul eclipses previous best
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah contingent set a new record gold medal haul in their Sukma Games history after eclipsing their Sukma Sabah 2002 tally on the second last day of the competition in Ipoh, Perak.On Friday, they added five more golds for a total of 31 collected to better its previous best of 28 gold medals achieved as hosts 16 years ago.

They also took home two more silvers and three bronzes.

Pencak Silat was the biggest contributor on the day by producing three winners, their fifth in total for the contingent.

It began with Amiruddin Adzmi in the Men's Class H (80-85kg) where he demolished Aizat Iqbal Anuar from Johor 5-0, followed by Nursyazeera Hidayah Idris in the Women's Class B (50-55kg) with a 4-1 win over Nur Ainil Afifah Alias of Terengganu before Andi Azura Muluk edged out Nur Adlilah Zamri from Perak 3-2 in the Women's Class D (60-65kg).

Their takings saw them emerge as overall runners-up behind Pahang, and Andi was also awarded the most promising female athlete.

Coach and ex-world champion Emy Latip was full of praise with the achievement of her athletes as they also won two silvers and three bronzes.

"It was a very good result from the team and I am very grateful with the overall achievement from the athletes as it well exceeded my initial target of three gold medals," she said.

Meanwhile, the other gold came in the boxing ring where Khairul Azim Naseer won the only gold for Sabah in the sport with a convincing 5-0 win over Sarawak's Daeloniel Mcdelon Bong in the bantamweight final.

The women's sepak takraw quadrant team comprising of Ellzah Blanda, Madziatul Rosmahani Saidin, Nadillatul Rosmahani Saidin, Nur Fateha Rossli, Nurfaezahni Masri and Siti Hadinavilla Jumidil then added the fifth after they came from a set down to beat Perak 16-21, 21-13, 21-10 in the final.

The final gold came from the men's hockey team who ended the final event of the day with a nailing-biting 4-2 penalty shootout win over Pahang after both teams were tied 1-1 at the final whistle.

Sabah's first silver of the day came from archery where Eugenious Lo Foh Soon was unable to win his fifth gold in the Games after he and teammates Chin Shi Yi and Mecedger Sage Edie lost the Compound Men's Team final to Penang in a shoot-off while the second was delivered by the women's hockey team who lost 0-1 to Selangor in the final.

The three bronzes came from cyclist Waldron Chee Wen Chon in the Men's Individual Pursuit 4km event and the men and women squash teams who lost their semi-final matches 1-2 to Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan respectively. - GL Oh
