Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s Charlayne Chong will be making her debut in the Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific (WAAP) tournament at the Siam Country Club, Pattaya, Thailand starting today (Thursday) until Sunday (February 4).

She is among the six players named by the Malaysia Golf Association based on merit to represent the country in the four-day competition.

Her teammates are JX Ng, Foong Zi Yu, Wang Xin Yao, Pang Hee Jie and Sohniya Chandra Mohan.

The 22-year-old Kota Kinabalu lass, who is a third year business administration degree student at UUM (Universiti Utara Malaysia), was pleased to earn the slot and vowed to give her best.

“It was a very good year for me in 2023. I am glad that all my hard work paid off to qualify for this championship based on my World Amaterur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

“It is already an achievement to make the cut but of course I will do my best as I will be playing against the top six best amateurs of all the countries in the Asia Pacific region.

“It is going to be a very tight schedule for me as I have to rush back on February 5 immediately after the tournament to sit for my examination before heading home on February 7 to celebrate Chinese New Year with my family,” she said on Wednesday.

Charlayne competed in 12 tournaments with ranking points last year and had won two titles at the Sabah Amateur Open and Sirkit Golf Remaja Kedah in addition to eight top 10 finishes.

Meanwhile, WAAP in its sixth edition was developed by the R&A (Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews) and Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation to unearth emerging talent and provide a pathway for Asia’s elite female amateurs to the international stage.

The winner will earn invitations to play in three major championships – the AIG Women’s Open, the Amundi Evian Championship and the Chevron Championship as well as elite championships such as the Hana Financial Group Championship, ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open, the 121st Women’s Amateur Championship and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.
