Lahad Datu: A husband's attempt to cover up his evil deed by fabricating a housebreaking incident was foiled after his partner in crime was nabbed by police.District Police Chief ACP Hamzah Ahmad said police received a report from a woman saying she lost RM30,000 worth of jewellery in a housebreaking incident on May 31.

He said acting on information, police detained a local man on June 4 at a house in Taman Fajar, the same residential area where the incident took place. They also found six pawnshop receipts.

Hamzah said police later seized three necklaces, two bracelets and three rings from the pawnshop, all belonging to the complainant.

"Investigations on the suspect revealed that the jewellery were given to him by the complainant's husband, who had planned the housebreaking incident to steal his wife's jewellery.

"The complainant's husband was also detained to assist in the investigation. Both suspects tested positive for drugs and are currently in custody," he said, adding that the case was investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code.

In another burglary case, Hamzah said they received a report from a man saying his house at Taman Hing Nam was broken into.

The man claimed to have suffered losses of about RM3,500, including a Seiko watch, when his family was on a two-day vacation since May 29.

Following the report, he said they nabbed three suspects aged between 15 and 16 at three different locations on June 1.

He said the first suspect was detained around 1.15pm at the Fajar centre area, followed by the second suspect at Jalan Teratai and the third at the Dewan Mustapha area.

"The arrest of the first suspect led to the discovery of the Seiko watch belonging to the complainant.

"Further investigation revealed that the first suspect, the mastermind of the housebreaking incident, is the foster child of the family," he said.

Hamzah said all three suspects are in custody to assist in investigations under Section 457 of the Penal Code.

House owners going back to their villages and leaving their homes vacant during Hari Raya celebrations are advised to increase the security of their houses.

Hamzah said house owners should inform their trusted neighbours and ask them to help take care of their houses.

"Ensure maximum security in your house by making sure that doors are padlocked and security lights or alarm systems are switched on.

"The public should also inform the police so that we can arrange for regular patrols to ensure the security of houses left vacant during the festive season," he said. - Efa Rizan
