30 UMS students appointed as digital ambassadors
Kota Kinabalu: A total of 30 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students were appointed as Student Ambassadors under the CelcomDigi X UMS Student Ambassador: S.A.F.E Internet Awareness Programme to promote internet safety awareness, ethical use of technology and the prevention of digital scams within the local community.

The programme is a strategic collaboration between CelcomDigi Berhad and the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy (FPEP) UMS, with the involvement of the Faculty’s Student Association (PMPEP), in line with efforts to strengthen university-industry-community linkages.

FPEP Dean Associate Professor Dr Mohd Rahimie Abd Karim said the involvement of industry players such as CelcomDigi reflects a meaningful corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at fostering a harmonious, progressive and stable society, particularly through the empowerment of digital literacy and internet safety.

He said the programme was systematically designed to ensure a significant impact on target groups, especially in addressing growing cyber security threats and digital fraud in line with rapid technological development.

Under the programme, the appointed students will undergo training using special modules provided by CelcomDigi, covering internet safety, ethical technology use and scam prevention measures.

Rahimie said the selected Student Ambassadors will later be directly involved in phased community outreach programmes involving villages as well as primary and secondary schools around the UMS area.

He said the approach not only ensures effective knowledge transfer, but also produces knowledgeable, confident students capable of acting as agents of digital awareness among their peers and the wider community.

The initiative, he added, is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in quality education, sustainable communities and strategic partnerships.

From the students’ perspective, Rahimie said the programme serves as a platform for personal development through the enhancement of soft skills such as communication, leadership and teamwork, while also instilling a sense of social responsibility.

He also expressed appreciation to CelcomDigi for its commitment to the programme, describing it as consistent with UMS’ aspiration as the “Brain of Borneo”.

Rahimie was speaking at the programme’s opening ceremony held at The Hotelab, FPEP UMS, recently.

At the ceremony, Rahimie also presented appointment certificates to the Student Ambassadors, represented by Azura, who is the programme director.
