100 engineering students benefit from talk
Guests, speakers and organising committee members in a group photo at the IEM-UMS Career Talk 2025.
Kota Kinabalu: A total of 100 students from various engineering disciplines – including electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, oil and gas, and computer engineering – gained valuable exposure to diverse career pathways at the IEM-UMS Career Talk 2025.

The one-day programme was organised by the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), in collaboration with the Young Engineers Section (YES) Sabah Branch and the IEM Student Section, Faculty of Engineering UMS.

It was held recently at Galeri Majlis, Bangunan Canselori, UMS, from 8am to 1pm.

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation) Professor Ir Dr Rosalam Sarbatly officiated the event, reflecting UMS’ strong commitment to strengthening professional exposure among young engineers.

His presence set an encouraging tone, motivating students to embrace innovation as they shape their future careers.

The event was also graced by key industry and academic figures, including Sabah Electricity CEO and Chairman of IEM Sabah Branch Datuk Ir Ts Mohd Yaakob Hj. Jaafar; Dean of the Faculty of Engineering UMS, Associate Professor Ir Dr Abu Zahrim Yaser; Advisor of the IEM-UMS Student Section, Ir Dr Chua Bih Lii; Chairman of IEM-YES Sabah Branch, Lee Tze Yei; Leader of the IEM-YES Sabah Graduate and Student, Ts Dr Nurul Shahadatul Afizah Asman; and Immediate Past Chairman of IEM-YES Sabah, Ag Khairul Akmal Kamaludin.

Throughout the programme, five invited speakers representing different engineering sectors delivered impactful and insightful presentations. 

Their topics ranged from empowering Sabah’s energy future and engineering sustainability through water solutions to leadership lessons drawn from military experience, the future of engineering in the space age, and building a sustainable world through civil engineering.

Each sharing offered students a deeper understanding of the evolving engineering landscape and the skills needed to excel.

A lively Q&A session concluded the event, where students posed questions about employer expectations, industry readiness, and the realities of entering the workforce. 

The speakers addressed these queries by sharing real-world insights, leaving students inspired and better prepared to explore the opportunities ahead.

The programme was made possible through the commitment of IEM-YES Sabah, Graduate and Student Leader Ts Dr Nurul Shahadatul, and the IEM-UMS Student Section led by Chairman Efrain Harris Modoit.

Their dedicated committee, responsible for handling protocol, logistics, multimedia, registration, and technical support, ensured a smooth and meaningful event for all participants.
