TAWAU: The launch of direct flights between Shenzhen and Tawau marks a significant milestone in strengthening ties between the two regions, according to Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce (CCCT) President Chia Seong Fatt.
“The new route not only provides easier access between Tawau and a major economic hub in Southern China, but also unlocks greater potential for trade, cultural exchanges, and industrial cooperation,” Chia said.
He added that CCCT will continue to serve as a bridge to foster closer collaboration between Tawau and Shenzhen. “We aim to strengthen Tawau’s external relations, attract more international air routes, and boost local economic development. We hope this inaugural Shenzhen-Tawau flight opens a new chapter in international relations for the district,” Chia said.
The charter service, jointly organised by Shenzhen Kanghui Travel Service and Huan Ya Holidays, is expected to bring over 1,300 tourists to Tawau and Semporna throughout December, providing a significant boost to the region’s tourism economy.
Chia expressed appreciation to representatives from seven major ethnic organisations in Tawau, the Tawau Food and Beverage Traders Association, and the Tawau Press Association for supporting and attending the inaugural flight celebration.
The maiden direct flight from Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, operated by Loong Air, arrived at Tawau Airport last Saturday. It was welcomed by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Dr Andi Md Shamsureezal Sainal Abidin and a CCCT delegation led by Deputy President William Tan.
The welcoming ceremony, organised by CCCT, Tawau Airport management, and local associations, featured lion dance performances by the Tawau Teochew Association and distribution of local-themed souvenirs to passengers.
Chia said the new international route shortens travel between Tawau and Southern China and creates opportunities for international market expansion, tourism development, and regional cooperation.
William noted that the arrival of international tourists via direct flights is expected to invigorate hotels, tourism services, island resorts, and food and beverage industries along Sabah’s East Coast.
“This development will certainly strengthen Semporna’s appeal as a world-class island tourism destination,” he said.
