TAWAU: Sabah is still waiting for its first People’s Residency Programme (PRR) development under the Madani Government despite holding the national record with 39 People’s Housing Programme (PPR) projects, under the Madani Government.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said his Ministry plans to roll out the first PRR project in Sabah under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13).
“We aim to develop Sabah’s first PRR project and make it a world-class example of affordable housing,” Nga said during a press conference, here, on Wednesday.
Nga also stressed the importance of Federal-State alignment post-November elections to ensure smoother allocation distribution to Sabah.
The PRR, he said, is a rebranded and upgraded version of the now-discontinued PPR programme, introduced to meet international housing standards and provide higher quality, sustainable living for Malaysians.
“As part of public housing reform, new PPR projects will no longer be built. We’re shifting to PRR, which is designed to meet global benchmarks,” he said.
He cited the international success of Malaysian developers who clinched gold at the FIABCI World Prix d’Excellence Awards for the world’s best affordable housing, two years in a row, as proof of the country’s ability to deliver high-quality public housing.
The Cabinet approved the transition from PPR to PRR in Sept 2024, with a vision to provide modern, sustainable homes for low- to middle-income Malaysians.
