CITY HALL is keeping an eye on the streetlights in a Karamunsing neighbourhood and around the traffic-light intersection near the Inanam Business Centre, following feedback from a pair of motorists about irregularities involving these amenities.

One decried the patches of darkness along the housing road where she lives, while the other feared that some of streetlights on the divider near the intersection could topple onto main road at any time.

The latter also spoke out about the condition of the trees on the median. She noticed that their canopy had become so thick with the branches and leaves obscuring much of the brightness of the lights.

These individuals related their observations separately to Hotline. Their grievances were forwarded to the agency.

Action was taken to set any leaning streetlight poles on the divider upright.

A spokesman for City Hall’s Engineering Department (ED) said its electrical contractor was alerted to the streetlight concerns on Jalan Sang Kancil 1 and the section of Jalan Tuaran in the vicinity of the Inanam Business Centre.

The individual checked on the public lighting along the first road, which spanned about 543metres, shortly after this, according to him.

“Two 125watt lanterns and two 125watt ballasts were changed as a result of this check,” he said.

He explained that a “ballast” regulated the electrical current to the lanterns and provided sufficient voltage to start the lanterns.

The spokesman said the contractor conducted a day-time test to determine if the lights were coming on as they should.

“He and his workers later returned at night to gauge if the stretch was adequately illuminated.”

The individual monitored the “trouble spots” for several days afterwards, according to him.

“The lights on Jalan Sang Kancil 1 did not breakdown during this time.”

In the case of Jalan Tuaran, the spokesman said ED staff sought the assistance of their Landscaping peers to deal with the overgrown trees on the divider near the Inanam intersection.

A spokesman for City Hall’s Landscaping Department said its Tree Pruning Unit trimmed the canopy of this greenery on a recent week-day night.

“A skylift and one of our open trucks was sent to facilitate the effort of the 10 personnel assigned to carry out this work,” he said.

The ED spokesman said the agency’s electrical contractor subsequently attended to the lights on the median.

“He and his workers set any which were leaning over upright and later checked on the bulbs and other related mechanisms.”

None of these components were damaged, according to him.

“Nevertheless, we have called on the contractor to step up the night-time surveillance in this part of Inanam, as well as in Karamunsing, for the benefit of the many drivers who use the roads in these areas.”

When asked how often the streetlights which belonged to City Hall were maintained, the spokesman said this was done as and when it warranted doing so.
