Kota Kinabalu: Volkswagen Kota Bumi unveiled the all new Touareg R-Line for Sabah at their showroom in an exclusive preview in Inanam, here, on Saturday.

Bookings in the region opened just four weeks after Volkswagen Passengers Cars Malaysia (VPCM) officially introduced the locally assembled SUV to the Malaysian market.

The recommended retail price is RM474,098 inclusive of the Volkswagen Assurance Package.

The Touareg, now in its third generation, is Volkswagen’s (VW) first SUV when it made global preview in 2002.

With over 1.14 million units sold worldwide, itremains their popular model.

Kota Bumi Dealer Principal, Carlwin Yee Tet Choi believes the Touareg will appeal to those looking for that something special in an SUV.

It is a more premium SUV but our price range is quite wide…VW is focusing on the middle and higher income earners,” he said.

Earlier in his opening speech, he said Malaysia is first country outside of Slovakia to assemble the Touareg.

“The Touareg carries the biggest significance for Volkswagen and is a pioneer in so many ways. This was our first SUV.

“To be the first country to locally assemble the Touareg outside of its factory in Slovakia is a big recognition from the Volkswagen Group,” he said.

He detailed that the car is assembled in Pekan, Pahang.

In response to potential buyers who question spare parts availability, he said originals are readily available in the country as the spare part hub for South East Asia is located in Johor.

“It used to be in Singapore but five years ago they moved into the country to our benefit.

“VW is quite popular in Sabah, especially the Beetle. We have a lot of Tiguans also, good sales and response from Sabah.

“The market is getting better. More have come to trust the brand and feedbacks have been positive. We have many repeat customers.

“More than 100 Touaregs have been sold in Sabah since 2012. We are expecting similar numbers or even better with the R-Line,” he said.

When asked about electronic vehicles (EV) he said VW is already plugged into the market but will be seen in Malaysia only by 2025. He said VW’s EV line is called ID.

“ID4 is also an SUV and ID7 a sedan capable of up to 700 kilometers per charge,” he said.

Carlwin highlighted the car’s independent multilink air suspension for the ultimate comfort.

“Only one wheel goes up the bump so the car doesn’t tilt. The car’s height can also be preset for loading and off-road driving.

“It is equipped with a night vision camera that can measure infrared signal of up to 130 meters in low light conditions… It can detect body heat from animals and humans.

“A radar system detects cars in front for autonomous braking and adaptive cruise control which follows the speed of the vehicle in front.

“There are 18 settings for the IQ Light HD Matrix lights alone. You won’t have turn the high beams on and off as it will auto adjust and not dazzle cars in front,” he said were among other features.

The car comes in five colour choices with the Volkswagen Assurance Package that includes 5 years free maintenance, 5 years unlimited mileage warranty, and 5 years complimentary roadside assistance.
