Sabah Karate Association take third spot
All the SKA medal winners showing off their medals.
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) came in third overall in the recently concluded Shotokan Open Championship 2026 held at the Indoor Stadium, Kompleks Sukan Negara Hassanal Bolkiah, Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei.

They secured 10 golds, 12 silvers, and 18 bronzes to place them behind the host, Shotokan Karate Brunei Darussalam, who dominated the event with a total of 24 golds, 26 silvers, 41 bronzes, and second placed Wadokai Karate Brunei Darussalam with 11 golds, 11 silvers, and 13 bronzes.

The gold medallists for SKA were Jordan Habel Joey (-57kg Male Cadet Kumite & Cadet Male Best Of The Best); Anna Qaisara Mohd Nazri (-54kg Female Cadet Kumite); Michelle Jane Sunduvan Jomisol (9-10 years Female Kata); Aunie Qaisara Mohd Nazri (U14 Female Ind Kata & U14 Female Kumite +35kg); Sofea Aisya Sudiman (9-10 Female Kumite +30kg); SKA 1 (9-10 Female Team Kata); Kurba Abdul Karim (Veteran Female Individual Kata and the Mix Team (Kumite Junior Cadet).

The silvers were delivered by Dyxen Dix Danny Boy (-57kg Male Cadet Kumite); Arif Muiz (-52kg Male Cadet Kumite); Michael Gary (Cadet Male Ind Kata); Deavreel Viver Danny Boy (U14 Male Ind Kata); Hazelle Aevilla (U14 Female Ind Kata); Marissa Izzabella (9-10 years Female Kata); Faiz Nawfal Faidzzal (9-10 Male Ind Kata); Qaisha Medina (U14 Female Kumite +35kg); Nur Shaheen Izazi Imtiaz Ali (Senior Kata Female & Senior Kumite -55kg); SKA 2 (9-10 Female Team Kata) and Sandra Patrick (Veteran Female Ind Kata).

The contingent led by team manager Irnamirzah Abraham comprised of 18 females and 18 males.

SKA Secretary General Julian Chin was generally pleased with the performance of all the athletes despite not setting any target.

“Many in the team are third-tier athletes and our focus to participate in the competition was more on exposure rather than outcomes.

“To win that many medals is a bonus and a clear indication that our programme is on the right track,” he said.
