SANDAKAN: A local man was brought before the Magistrate’s Court here on Friday on four charges of trafficking three girls aged 15, 16 and 17, and a 30-year-old woman for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
No plea was recorded from Chu Nyuk Sheng, 33, as the offences fall under the jurisdiction of the Sessions Court.
The four charges were read before Magistrate Nur Faezah Jafry, with three of the alleged offences said to have been committed at a hotel in Sandakan town at about 10.45pm on May 14, involving the three girls who were rescued during a police inspection.
The fourth offence allegedly took place at a hotel in Bandar Leila, here, on the same day at about 10.15pm and involved the 30-year-old woman.
Chu was charged under Section 14(1) of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which carries a penalty of life imprisonment or a jail term of not less than five years, and may also include whipping upon conviction, while the court fixed June 15 for case mention in the Sessions Court and denied bail pending case management.
