Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the Sabah Government remains committed to protecting the environment while safeguarding the State’s economic future.
He said Sabah fully supports renewable energy and stronger environmental protection, but stressed that the State is still developing and requires infrastructure expansion, industrial growth, job creation and improved energy security for long-term progress.
Speaking at the Powering Green Growth: Sabah and Malaysia in the Age of Sustainability World Green and Sustainability Summit here on Monday, Hajiji said energy should be viewed not only as an environmental issue, but also as an economic and long-term security matter for Sabah.
He said Sabah’s Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 focuses on reliable, accessible, affordable and sustainable energy through better generation reserves, an improved energy mix and greater renewable energy contribution, including solar, hydro, biomass and biogas.
Hajiji also said Sabah deserves fair economic value for its environmental contribution, noting that conservation carries economic costs and that the benefits created through carbon absorption and biodiversity protection extend beyond Sabah to Malaysia, the region and the wider world.
