Kota Kinabalu: A 33-year-old man was fined RM4,000 or four months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for being a member of an unlawful society based in the Philippines – the second such case.
Al Azmi pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali to being a member of Kappa Rho Kappa/Knights Right Keppers (KRK), an unlawful organisation declared illegal under the Societies Act 1966.
The offence was committed at the parking area in front of the Karamunsing police station here at about 10am on April 20, this year.
The charge under Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966 carries a jail term of up to five years, or a fine of up to RM15,000, or both, on conviction.
On May 12, Mazlan Ronnie, 25, was jailed three months for displaying the symbol of an illegal organisation.
The prosecution informed the court that a police team conducted an operation at the location and detained Al Azmi.

Police inspections found burn marks on Al Azmi’s right thumb, believed to be a sign of membership in the KRK group.
Al Azmi voluntarily admitted that he had been a member of the group since October 2009 and had undergone a paddling ceremony as part of the initiation process.
Further investigations based on the confession and examinations conducted found that Al Azmi was involved with the unlawful organisation, which had been gazetted by the Home Ministry.
Meanwhile, a 49-year-old man, who admitted to insulting the modesty of a woman by sending obscene content through WhatsApp, was released on a bond of good behaviour for one year without sureties and RM2,000 bail undeposited.
Magistrate Wan Farrah made the order on Jamal Ladau under Section 173A(2)(b) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Jamal pleaded guilty to sending an obscene image and inappropriate message to a WhatsApp group for others to see, offending a 44-year-old woman.
The offence, framed under Section 509 of the Penal Code, was committed near the gate area of Cybercity 2, Penampang, at about 5pm on Feb 16, 2024.
Counsel Datuk Ram Singh later informed the media that he had informed the court that there was a plea bargaining and that the plea bargaining had been accepted, adding that during mitigation he applied for a bond of good behaviour under Section 173A(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, saying among others that Jamal was remorseful and that the act was unintentional.
