Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) has urged Putrajaya to revise the MyKas policy, warning that strict requirements are leaving many stateless individuals in Sabah without legal identity despite clear ties to the country.
Sabah MHO coordinator Capt (R) Jerry Jaimeh said the issue should be addressed at the federal level, with the existing system improved rather than replaced, as the current criteria exclude many eligible applicants on technical grounds.
He said rigid documentation requirements have split families into different legal categories, with some recognised as citizens while others remain undocumented or stateless.
He also noted cases in which individuals lost temporary status due to administrative changes, adding that enforcement alone is ineffective, as many cannot be deported.
Jerry warned that the stateless population could increase by another one million on top of the estimated two million already in Sabah, adding that MHO would submit a memorandum seeking urgent policy reform.
