KPDN Labuan compounds two traders over violations

LABUAN: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in Labuan has taken enforcement action against two traders following consumer complaints involving violations of domestic trade and consumer protection laws.

Chief Enforcement Officer Amuliddin Malang said two compound notices were issued after enforcement teams conducted inspections at several business premises around Labuan, recently.

One of the compounds was issued to the operator of a mini market in a rural area for failing to display price tags on goods offered for sale.

According to Amuliddin, the offence falls under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Price Marking for Goods and Charges for Services) Order 2020, which is enforced under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (Act 723).

Under the law, individuals convicted of the offence may face fines of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both, while companies may be fined up to RM100,000. 

Repeat offenders may face higher penalties, including fines of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to three years for individuals, while companies may be fined up to RM250,000.

In a separate case, a vehicle workshop owner in another rural area was compounded for failing to display mandatory workshop information as required under the Consumer Protection (Disclosure of Workshop Information) Regulations 2002, enforced under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 (Act 599).

Individuals convicted under the regulation may face fines of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both, while companies may be fined up to RM100,000.

Amuliddin stressed that all traders must comply with existing laws, particularly obligations related to displaying prices and service information clearly, in order to safeguard consumer rights and promote transparent and ethical business practices.

He added that KPDN Labuan would continue intensifying inspections and monitoring activities and would not compromise with any party found violating domestic trade laws.

The public was also encouraged to continue providing complaints and information to KPDN to facilitate swift enforcement action for the benefit of consumers and the local community.
