Kota Kinabalu: Sabah needs the support of West Malaysians and Sarawakians in claiming its entitled constitutional and legal right to 40 per cent of federal tax revenue collection from the state as agreed under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
“It’s really important to also look at the larger picture. The understanding and awareness of MA63 is very high in Sabah and Sarawak. But, unfortunately, not widely understood in Peninsula Malaysia,” said Prof. James Chin of the University of Tasmania.
“The Malay establishment in peninsula, through their indirect control of the media there, has portrayed this issue as a grievance on part of some others to grab a bigger share than they are entitled.
“This is part of the narrative. The more dangerous narrative the last two years is that ‘we must not give in. The more we give in, the more they will push for concessions’,” said Prof. Chin.
