Kota Kinabalu: Three individuals were fined a total of RM3,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here for separate gambling-related offences.
Aeron Ronie, 25, Ezra Anne, 35, and Nur Akma Azura, 34, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to the charges against them.
Each was fined RM1,000 or two months’ jail in default.
Aeron was found gambling in a public place in front of a shop in Tebobon at 2.40pm on March 22 this year.
The offence is punishable under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months’ imprisonment, or both.
The court heard that police, acting on information under “Op Dadu”, went to the location and observed suspicious activity before detaining Aeron.
A mobile phone used for online gambling was also seized, and Aeron later admitted to the offence.
Ezra was found engaging in online gambling at a café in Buhavan Square, Donggongon, Penampang at 1.50pm on April 6 this year.
The court was told that police conducted an operation at the premises and found her using a mobile phone, which later contained evidence of online gambling activities.
The device was seized.
Nur was found to have purchased illegal lottery tickets at 3pm on Jan 13 this year at a five-footway in front of a shop in Donggongon New Township, Penampang.
She was found selling illegal “wah hui” lottery tickets, and items related to the activity were seized.
Inspector Mohamad Hamidi Mohamad Hamzah prosecuted.
