Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Literary Circle (SLC) is set to launch its inaugural talk with a deep dive into one of the region’s most significant historical narratives – the Sulu Claims.
Renowned local historian Dr Shari Jeffri, who serves as the lead researcher for Borneo Perantis Project and is the founder of Borneo History, will headline the event.
Writing under the pen name Kumis Kumis, Dr Shari is expected to provide an exhaustive look into the complexities of the claim, moving beyond headlines to the historical heart of the matter.
During the session, Dr Shari will share his extensive research and readings, focusing on several specific components to help the public better understand the subject.
This includes the presentation of a mini documentary on the Sulu Claim history, a timeline exhibition detailing the chronological events that shaped the claim and an exclusive look at 16 secret files related to the matter.
He will also discuss a curated selection of books specifically related to the history and legalities of the subject.

The SLC Secretariat highlighted that the talk aims to go beyond basic facts, encouraging participants to understand why Dr Shari is passionate about this subject and why such historical knowledge is vital for the region today.
The goal is to help the public become more conversant with the subject through critical thinking and analysis, said the SLC Secretariat, adding it is about understanding the history behind the claims and why it remains a crucial piece of our regional knowledge.
The Malaysian Government has already successfully defended the nation’s sovereignty. The claims have been rejected and won by Malaysia in international courts of arbitration. Dr Shari’s role is strictly to narrate his personal research findings.
The talk is part of a collaborative effort between the Borneo History Research Centre (BHRC) and the Sabah State Library.
The library serves as the venue and audio-visual partner, fulfilling its role in supporting local authors and fostering a more literate, informed society.
As this marks the inaugural talk for the Sabah Literary Circle, the first 20 attendees will receive a free mystery gift. The event serves as a platform for local writers to grow, share their inspirations and engage in meaningful dialogue with the community.
