TAWAU: The Federal and State Governments are urged to introduce a comprehensive transformation blueprint to address recurring large-scale fires in water villages and prevent loss of life and property.
Kalabakan MP Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy said the recent fire in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, which destroyed thousands of homes and left over 10,000 people homeless, should serve as a lesson.
He stressed the need for a structured plan to prevent repeated fire disasters and ensure a more responsive safety management system.
He said disaster preparedness must go beyond discussion and be translated into a mandatory plan for all water villages.
He also called on relevant agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), to conduct regular safety awareness programmes for residents.
Andi Suryady warned that poor settlement management and low awareness could lead to issues such as illegal water and electricity connections, security risks and social problems.

He noted that large fires not only cause emotional distress but also strain government funds, diverting resources from development projects like roads and schools.
While commending the State Government’s efforts, he urged immediate implementation of the blueprint in high-risk areas, including Kalabakan, to avoid a repeat of the Kampung Bahagia tragedy.
He also highlighted the importance of maintaining fire hydrants, urging residents to report any damage or obstruction, as this could affect emergency response efforts.
