PENAMPANG: Trading card games (TCG) are emerging as an effective way to sharpen minds and build youth potential, prompting calls for greater government support.
Sabah Trading Card Game Enthusiasts and Collectors Association (Strageca) president Aliff Azmie said TCGs go beyond leisure, helping players develop communication skills, confidence and critical thinking, especially among students.
He said the hobby has already seen Sabah youths compete at national and international levels, but limited exposure and high participation costs remain barriers, with some forced to withdraw despite qualifying.
Aliff spoke during a three-day event at R916 in Megalong, held alongside the launch of Magic: The Gathering – Secret of Strixhaven, aimed at attracting new players and dispelling misconceptions about the hobby.
The programme drew 20 participants on its opening day, with total turnout expected to exceed 50, mostly students.
R916 owner Ericson Lotidis welcomed the strong response, noting growing interest in TCGs, while participants described the game as creative, strategic and supported by a friendly community.
Organisers say such initiatives could play a bigger role in youth development if given broader backing.
