The offence, under Section 506 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
The prosecution informed the court that the complainant was in the kitchen when Lay Ying became aggressive, threatened him, brandished a knife and attempted to attack him.
His wife intervened and managed to calm the situation before Lay Ying retreated to her room.
The incident was triggered after the complainant refused to give money requested by Lay Ying, who had acted aggressively on previous occasions when her demands were not met, causing fear for their safety.

Acting on information, police arrested Lay Ying at the house about an hour later and seized a knife from her room. She and the exhibit were taken to the Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters for further action.
In mitigation, Yap sought leniency, citing emotional distress, among other factors, while the prosecution urged for a deterrent sentence.
Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man was jailed six months for possessing housebreaking tools.
Alif Hussein pleaded guilty to having in his possession, without lawful excuse, tools commonly used for housebreaking, including three cable cutters and a chain block, at Jalan Coastal at 5pm on April 2.
The charge, under Section 18(e) of the Minor Offences Ordinance (Sabah), read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, provides for a jail term of up to six months upon conviction.
The court heard from the prosecution that police, acting on information, detected a suspicious van along Jalan Pantai Sembulan. The vehicle failed to stop, triggering a chase.
The driver escaped, but Alif, a passenger, was apprehended along Jalan Coastal after resisting arrest and injuring a policeman.
Police seized the van and the tools, and investigations revealed that Alif failed to provide a reasonable explanation for possessing the items and admitted involvement in cable theft and other theft cases in the city.
Unrepresented, Alif pleaded for leniency, saying he is married with a two-month-old baby and was worried about their care.
Inspector Yusdi Basri, prosecuting, applied for a deterrent sentence. The court ordered Alif to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.
