KUCHING: Cross-border traffic between Sarawak and Indonesia’s Kalimantan is increasing rapidly following the expansion of new road links connecting the two regions.
According to The Sun, the movement of people and goods across the border has surged as more land routes are opened, improving accessibility between Sarawak and Kalimantan.
Indonesian Consulate-General in Sarawak, Dr. Abdullah Zulkifli said there has been a sharp rise in cross-border activity, with many Indonesians travelling into Sarawak for work and trade, alongside growing cargo movement.
The increase is largely driven by infrastructure development on the Indonesian side, including roads linked to the construction of Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan.
Looking ahead, both Malaysia and Indonesia are planning major projects such as a cross-border superhighway along the Sarawak-Kalimantan boundary and the proposed Trans Borneo Railway, which are expected to further boost economic and social ties between the two regions.
