Kota Kinabalu: More than 500 people participated in the 30th anniversary of the Founder’s Fun Run 2024 organised by the National Cancer Council (Makna) at Tanjung Aru Perdana Park.

“The participants and supporters are united in the fight against cancer,” said Makna General Manager, Farahida Mohd Farid.

She expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community, emphasising the importance of running not only for oneself but also for those who cannot run, those who have bravely fought cancer but are no longer with us, and those who continue to inspire us.

Farahida acknowledged the crucial role of sponsors, volunteers, and participants in the success of the event, enabling Makna to continue its important work towards a cancer-free future.

“In addition to celebrating Makna’s three decades of dedicated service, the fun run served as a reminder of the ongoing battle against cancer,” she said.

Makna has been at the forefront of this battle since its establishment in 1994, providing vital services to cancer patients.

These services include the Makna bursary programme, which assists underprivileged cancer patients by providing hospital transportation allowances, medical equipment, non-formulary drugs, and essential items to aid in their fight against the disease.

“Makna has provided assistance to 6,024 cancer cases in Sabah as of 2023,” said Farahida.

Makna also operates a unit that offers free cancer screenings, including mammograms, ultrasounds, and iFOBT test kits, to remote communities lacking access to medical facilities.

“Nearly 10,000 cancer screenings have been conducted by Makna in Sabah,” she said.Makna Cancer Institute has established a collaboration with Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), providing comprehensive facilities such as an oncology ward, a radiotherapy centre, and a stem cell transplant ward.

Farahida said the institute has cared for a total of 26,234 cancer patients as of 2023.

Apart from the run, Makna also celebrated World Cancer Day on Feb 4, providing opportunities for visitors to engage with healthcare professionals, learn about cancer, and access resources provided by Makna and its partners.

The fun run event featured educational booths, interactive activities, and inspirational speeches, fostering a sense of empowerment and unity among participants.
