Kota Kinabalu: The State Government has allocated a sum of RM27.13 million to boost the State sports industry next year.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor made the pledge in his speech at the opening ceremony of the 10th Sabah Games at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) here on Saturday.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya and Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin.

He said the provision is to ensure that more young talents will be developed to help the sports sector in the State.

“I have asked the Youth and Sports Ministry to encourage more young people to get involved in sports to further improve the quality of sports in Sabah.

“It is very important for us to produce back-up athletes in all levels of sports. This is a long-term plan we are committed to meet the required target,” he said.

He pointed out that the construction and provision of many infrastructures in the State is inline with  Sabah’s vision to produce world-class athletes.

He also said the large number of people involved in the biennial games is an indication that Sabah are heading in the right direction.

“I am also very honoured to have the opportunity to be with the athletes and some of the sports personalities here tonight.

“I was informed that this time Saga will be attended by almost 7,000 sports enthusiasts including athletes and officials.

“This is a very large amount and this clearly shows the seriousness and commitment for us to succeed,” he said.

He further stressed that the government will ensure Sabah Games will continue to be improved so that it remains relevant as a platform for unearthing talents and producing potential athletes to be featured at the international level.

He also called on the athletes not to be complacent with their early success and must continue to rise with the right spirit to prepare for the Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Sarawak, August, next year.
