Sabah Fencing Association sending 23-member squad to Sarawak meet

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Fencing Association (SFA) will be taking part in the inaugural Borneo Fencing Challenge and Borneo Junior Fencing Championship scheduled to be held in Miri, Sarawak starting this Friday.

SFA secretary general Raymond Chan said in a statement issued on Tuesday said that the historic event with the challenge trophy donated by SFA patron Datuk Yap Pak Leong is jointly organised by Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia Kalimantan with Miri as host.

“This championship organised jointly for the first time has invited fencing talents from across the Borneo island to participate and we are anticipating to draw over 100 participants vying for the coveted trophy.

“It is set to etch its place as the pioneering milestone in Borneo’s fencing history and the generous contribution of the trophy by our patron, Datuk Yap Pak Leong, underscores the significance of this inaugural championship,” he said.

He also said Sabah will be represented by a 23-member team led by Godwin Chong as technical director together with head coach Bobby Chiw and coach Kelvin Chung.

The athletes are Teo Zhe Bin, Mozes O’Brien, Louis Chow Ming Liang, Phua Kyle Sean, Chong Xuan Cheng, Ronald Syleaster, Anderson Yee Yong Sheng, Adam Nicholas Lindbichler, Haidhar Mohd Shah Haizar Razif Hisyam, Wong Jia Xi, Yasmine Wahidah Mohd Idremizizan, Aries Eve Leong Ying Ee, Sonia Ling Tian Jia, Oh Kaj Giok, Kuok Koh Yin, Chong Vui Lun, Lim Si Hau, Amelia Chin Shing Yuet, Zoey Wong Yui Khee, Suzanna Chong Shin Ru, Faith Miley Boxey, Premdeep Kaur and Jovin Chua Yun Ying.

Meanwhile, organising chairman Affandi Ahmad, who is also president of the Sarawak Fencing Association accompanied by his committee, received the trophy from Yap here recently which was witnessed by SFA president Datuk Alex Sham, vice president Dr. Bobby Chiw, Raymond Chan and treasurer Stephen Teo.
