Marine police always ready to counter threats: Chief
Lahad Datu: Marine Police, especially in the East Coast, are always prepared to counter threats in national waters.Sabah Regional Marine Police Commander ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali said any security implication that is triggered by any party will not be taken lightly.

In this regard, he said, current threats such as cross-border crimes including kidnapping, smuggling and human trafficking are the main focus of the force.

Besides, he said police would also focus on the threat posed by radical groups and foreign terrorist fighters such as the Royal Sulu Force, Abu Sayyaf, Al Dakwa Al Islamiya Fi Al Iraq Wa Al Sham (Daesh) and Islamic State Iraq & Syria (ISIS).

"Not only that, the approaches also for environmental threat and crime in the national waters such as fish bombing.

"Although safeguarding national security is not easy, we always strive in ensuring the national waters are safe," he told a press conference after the MPF Monthly assembly at Lahad Datu MPF base, Tuesday.

Pajeri said, MPF received the full support and cooperation from all agencies including Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom). He said crime prevention efforts were undertaken together to further strengthen national security.

"MPF also holds monthly meeting with neighbouring countries to fight the cross-border crimes as well as exchanging information.

"All the efforts undertaken to safeguard national security will be strengthen from time to time and we hope the government will also increase our assets to boost our performance," he added.

In 2018, MPF recorded 1,316 cases with RM17,054,022.63 million worth of arrests, seizures and summons.

He said from January to November, this year, MPF inspected 41,882 boats and 176,397 individuals as well as seized 164 boats.

He welcomed the proposal for resuming the system with upgraded Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) made recently by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

He added that MPF have no issue as the system have been implemented before and MPF are always in ready-state condition.

Earlier, Pajeri awarded promotions to 21 lance corporals for time based service and presentation certificate of appreciation to 30 MPF members for their excellent service. - Eifa Rizan
