Sandakan: Defending champion Borneo Eagles made it to the semi-finals of the 15th Borneo Sevens after beating Tribe 7s in an anticipated quarter-final encounter, at the Eagles Sports Arena, here, Saturday.Clinching a 19-0 win, Borneo Eagles has denied the opportunity for Tribe 7s from New Zealand to take a 'revenge' on their defeat in last year's finals.

Borneo Eagles will meet Sri Lanka in today's (Sunday) semi-final match.

Sri Lanka had to face a tough quarter-final against another team from New Zealand, Mellowpuff Barbarians as both teams were tied 19-19 after actual play which forced the match to be dragged into extra time.

Eventually luck was on Sri Lanka's side as they were awarded a penalty try by the referee to win the game.

In another quarter-final match, the national squad was defeated 7-40 by the Iconz from Australia.

Iconz will meet Hong Kong Dragon in the semi-final after the latter bested Sabah Eagles 29-7.

Meanwhile, in the women's category, defending champion Sri Lanka faced no problem in marching into the semi-final by beating Sabah Eagles 46-0 in the quarter-final.

Their opponent in the semi-final today will be South East Asian champion Thailand who defeated the Sabah Sukma team 52-0 in another quarter-final match.

Hong Kong Dragon who beat Islander Women Rugby Club (IWRC) from Labuan 83-0 will face Singapore Select team who defeated Eagles RFC 25-5 in today's semi-final.

Sri Lanka head coach Sudath Sampath hoped his team will be able to defend their championship albeit facing some injury problems.

"We have to work hard on our game as we won last year's tournament," he said when met, here, Saturday.

"We have to put more focus on our basics, especially our defence and attacks structure.

"The players play well but we are facing several injuries, and I hope they will get better by tomorrow (Sunday).

"Compared to last year, I think they can do better this year."

Actions on day three of the Borneo Sevens 2018 will start at 9.30am with the finals for the women's and men's Cup are scheduled to be held at 4.50pm and 5.30pm, respectively.
