Kota Kinabalu: Usno Baru is hoping to get a speedy approval from the Registrar of Societies (RoS) so that the party can make it on time to contest in the 14th general election. Its protem committee spokesman Kusugan Ali said in a statement that he had been interviewed by the RoS and asked if the party was pro Barisan Nasional or opposition.

"My answer was that we will support the government, if the party gets approved," he said, insisting that with the assurance, there should be no reason for any further delay.

The party hopes that the RoS would speed up with the approval so that it can contest in the coming general election, he added.

Kusugan, who in his previous statements identified himself as party protem deputy president, claimed to have been verbally informed that the RoS had arrived to a decision regarding the status of the party.

"In pursuant to that, I sent an application letter last year to ask what the decision was. I hope they can reply the letter as soon as possible so that we can conduct a general meeting and to continue administering Usno Baru," he further said.

The party's legal status has been in limbo due to an internal squabble over who among three of its leaders should be president.

Pending the final decision from RoS, the party is prohibited from carrying out any activity.

The old Usno was founded by Tun Mustapha, the third Chief Minister of Sabah.

The party came to power in 1967 and ruled the State until 1975. In 1976, it was defeated by Berjaya in the state election.

In 1996, the party was deregistered by the RoS.
