SHAH ALAM: Malaysia began their Kuala Lumpur SEA Games women's football campaign on a losing note after a 2-1 defeat to the Philippines at the Universiti Teknologi Mara Stadium (UiTM) Tuesday night.Malaysia's goalkeeper Nurul Azurin Mazlan was among the players who deserved praise when she came to the rescue with some excellent saves against the dangerous Filipino attacks.

Both teams showed a balanced game as soon as the match began, with Mohd Asyraaf Fong Abdullah's squad testing the Philippine defence which was led by their keeper Inna Kristianne Beza Palacios.

The Philippines broke the deadlock through their captain Patrice Mae San Pedro Impelido who headed in from a corner in first-half injury time.

In the second half, Asyraaf's tactical change in attack came to fruition when Dadree Rofinus scored the equaliser in the 52nd minute.

However, a lapse of concentration in the Malaysian defence saw an unmarked Kathleen Camille Muldon Rodriguez putting the Philippines back in front in the 74th minute.

The scoreline remained the same until the final whistle.

Meanwhile, Thailand head coach Spencer Prior urged his players to be wary of Malaysia's counter attacks ahead of the second Kuala Lumpur SEA Games preliminary match at the UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam on Aug 20.

He said poor defending in Tuesday's match at the UM Arena Stadium resulted in the team having to fight tooth and nail and come back from a goal down to beat Myanmar 3-2 in the opening match. – Bernama
