Kota Kinabalu: Majlis Permuafakatan Suluk Sabah (MPSS) or Sabah Suluk Solidarity Council has commended the continuous efforts of the authorities, particularly the National Registration Department (NRD) and police, in combating the issuance and usage of forged Malaysian identity cards.Describing the action as apt, MPSS Secretary Mohd Zaki Harry Susanto also urged the media not to be prejudiced by linking the arrest of Philippine nationals in connection with the offence to the local Sabah Suluk ethnic community.

"I am of the opinion that this is a national issue. If it's not dealt with well, it will further damage the good name of the local Suluk community as those arrested were often labelled as Suluk.

"Therefore, there needs to be a mechanism to differentiate those who call themselves Tausug from the Suluk in Sabah.

We (local Suluk) are a different entity because we are not Sulu ethnic group," he said.

Mohd Zaki was commenting on the arrest of 11 foreigners who were suspected of using fake Malaysian identity cards (ICs) and another 11 for using ICs belonging to other individuals, in Johor, on Friday.

All those arrested claimed they were from Sandakan, Sabah and that they had bought the MyKad from an agent in the district at RM300 to RM2,500 each.

Mohd Zaki said MPSS also hoped the mobilisation policy on officers working at all the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complexes would be reviewed to ensure they were not exposed to the elements of power abuse if stationed too long at any CIQ complex.

"We also hope that security can be tightened at all the major entry/exit points in Sabah, as it is perplexing how those using fake MyKad could pass through Immigration checks before leaving Sabah for other destinations.

"Thorough investigations should be carried out and the problem resolved comprehensively to protect the country's security and sovereignty," he said.
