Kota Kinabalu: Opposition parties in Sabah have been reminded not to engage in excessive politicking until it sabotages the State Government’s efforts to bring development and overcome legacy issues.

Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Information Chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said the GRS and Pakatan Harapan (PH) Plus-led State Government would always focus on developing Sabah and boosting the State’s revenue, and has also initiated efforts to tackle problems inherited from previous governments.

“The duty of a good opposition party is to give constructive criticism and not make allegations that the Government isn’t taking any measures,” he said.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who is also GRS Chairman, denied recently that his administration failed to administer and bring development to Sabah, as claimed by opposition leaders.

“The Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 plan is the State’s progress and development master plan for five years starting from 2021, encompassing all aspects including economy and upgrading basic facilities.

“Opposition leaders in Sabah cannot accept the fact that the GRS-PH Plus Government is in line with the SMJ’s direction,” he said.

Nizam said the State Government’s commitment to develop Sabah was clearly seen through the upgrading of the Kogopon water treatment plant in Papar and the Telibong II water treatment plant in Tuaran as well as the construction of the hydroelectric dam in Ulu Padas, Tenom, along with providing SMJ housing assistance and empowering human capital.

After Hajiji accused his opponents of spinning untruths to smear the Government, several GRS leaders defended his stand while Warisan maintained that its rival had failed to resolve the people’s issues.

GRS Deputy Youth Chief Iskandar Zulkarnain Ramli said Warisan leaders were bankrupt of issues and were just relying on unsubstantiated facts to paint a bad picture on the GRS Government under Hajiji.

“Warisan leaders only know how to label GRS and Hajiji as failures without wanting to look at the facts,” Zulkarnain said.

Earlier, Warisan’s Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong had said his party was voicing the people’s views on the State Government’s failure to effectively address water and electricity supply, as well as poor road conditions.

Iskandar said Chong ignored the fact that Hajiji had launched the Sabah Energy road map (SE-RAMP 2040) with the State Government taking over control of the Sabah Energy Commission from the Federal Government this year.

He said steps were also taken to improve capacity of water treatment plants across the State, and repair the dam gates at the Segualid water treatment plant which had been blamed for the “salty” water in Sandakan.

Warisan’s Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong joined in the fray, saying people want to see change but after four years of the GRS government, they had yet to see any.

He said accusing Shafie and Warisan of spinning untruths about GRS was an attempt by the state administration to “whitewash their failure or inaction” to resolve basic issues.
