Ranau: People in the district are urged to increase their crop cultivation areas in order to offset any drop in yields during this hot and dry spell because of the El Nino phenomenon.State Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Siringan Gubat said this would enable them to enjoy consistent yields.

"We hear the groans of villagers who claimed that the harvests this year have dwindled a lot due to the hot weather.

"The current hot weather poses a challenge to the farmers to get the best results, but one way that we may be able to deal with this is by doubling our growing areas.

"Considering the season we are celebrating today, the initiative to double our efforts in improving life is one of the essential ingredients of the yearly Harvest Festival celebrations," he said.

Siringan said Malaysians must be grateful because there are still many other lush plants in the country, such as fruits and commercial crops including oil palm that could sustain the livelihood of many smallholders.

"We should also be grateful because in Malaysia we still have enough food to eat. Imagine what the people in the Middle East are going through and facing every day.

"The positive attitude of always being grateful for what we have is one that needs to be applied in our society today.

This is the real spirit of the Harvest Festival," he explained.

Siringan, who is also Paginatan Assemblyman, said this when launching the Harvest Festival celebration of Kg Lungkidau Ranau held at the village's Balai Raya, on Friday.

Meanwhile, he reminded the people not to be easily influenced by rumours spread via social media by irresponsible quarters aimed at discrediting the Government.

"There are a lot of false information aimed to discredit the Government, especially in cases of application that have not been approved or realised in a particular area. Actually, all the allocations are channelled according to priority," he said.

During the event, Siringan also approved the construction of a Mini Dewan in Kg Lungkidau.

Also present were Community Development Leader (PPM) Paginatan, Georgina George, Private Secretary to the Ministry of Resource and Information Technology Development, Jaibi Dalius, and local leaders.
