SANDAKAN: The Little Hong Kong Food Festival organised by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sandakan has grown into more than just a food fair.
Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee said, it has become a platform for culture, entrepreneurship, community spirit, and other celebration of Sandakan’s rich and diverse culinary heritage.
“Food, as we all know, is more than sustenance,” she said.
“It brings people together. It tells a story of tradition, innovation, of who we are and where we come from.
And here in Sandakan, we are truly blessed with a multicultural blend of flavours from Chinese, Malay and other and indigenous cuisines, to the vibrant influences of our Sabahan roots,” she added.
Vivian said JCI Sandakan had once again done an outstanding job in not only organising this festival, but also using it as a way to empower local entrepreneurs, promote sustainable practices, and foster unity among the community.
Their efforts align beautifully with the JCI values of creating positive change and nurturing young leaders who are active citizens, said Vivian when officiating Little Hong Kong Food Festival 3.0 by JCI Sandakan at Sandakan Sports Complex, here, Friday.
Also present were Jetama Water Sdn Bhd Chairman Liau Fui Fui, Special Officer to Sandakan MP Tang Szu Ching, Organising Chairman Lau Kay Cheng, JCI Vice President Kael Lau and others.
Vivian said it is heartening to see this year’s focus on supporting local food vendors, family businesses, and homegrown talent.
In today’s economy, it is more important than ever to support our small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs), many of whom are the backbone of our local livelihood.
“To the vendors here today, their creativity, resilience, and passion are what make Sandakan’s food scene so special,” she said.
Whether they are serving a family recipe passed down through generations, or introducing a bold new fusion concept, your contribution to our culture and economy is deeply valued.
“And to the organising team — I know how much work goes into an event of this scale from planning logistics and vendor coordination to promoting the event and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all, your dedication and teamwork deserve a big round of applause,” she said.
“Let this event be a reminder of what we can achieve when we come together as a community.
“Let it be a source of inspiration, for young entrepreneurs to dream big, for families to bond over delicious food, and for all of us to continue building a vibrant, inclusive, and united Sandakan,” Vivian said.
“As we savour the sights, sounds, and taste of this wonderful festival, let us also remember to support one another to uplift local talent, protect our environment, and celebrate the diversity that makes us who we are.”
Vivian said she would support the food festival and hope it would be included in Sandakan Festival calendar.
Ealier, Lau thanked all for their efforts and support towards the event.
This year, the event was oragnised in collaboration with Persatuan Masyarakat TiongHwa Bersekutu Sandakan, Sabah.
“It not only fosters a spirit of unity, but also supports local economy and strengthens inter-racial relations,” Fui Fui said.
