SANDAKAN: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is intensifying research in food technology and modern agriculture as a strategic move to strengthen food security.
Its Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor, said the initiative aims to position Sabah as one of Southeast Asia’s main food producers. The effort is driven by university researchers and the Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture in Sandakan.
“The faculty focuses on high-technology agriculture, including precision farming, artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and innovation in food processing technology. A research- and innovation-based approach ensures Sabah can sustainably increase its own production rather than relying solely on external supplies,” he said.
Kasim highlighted Sandakan’s potential to become a modern agriculture hub due to its rich natural resources.
UMS also emphasises developing the full agricultural value chain, from production and cultivation to processing, packaging, and marketing of food products, enhancing local produce value and economic opportunities.
The university remains committed to producing graduates skilled in the latest agricultural technologies and modern farming methods to drive industry transformation.
Through research and strategic collaborations with industry and relevant agencies, UMS aims to help Sabah evolve from a food-importing state into a key regional food supplier.
“These proactive measures align with Sabah’s development agenda, focusing on sustainability, innovation, and food security for the wellbeing of the people,” he added.
