SIPITANG: The Immigration and Customs Checkpoint between Merapok Sarawak and Sindumin Sabah will now be open till midnight to allow people from Brunei to enter or exit Sabah.
Sipitang Member of Parliament Datuk Matbali Musah (pic) disclosed this after presenting donations to a mosque and a surau with Sindumin Assemblyman cum Qhazanah Sabah Berhad Chairman Datuk Dr Yusoff Yaccob at Masjid Kg Pelakat, here.

The mosque and surau received donations of RM500 and RM300, respectively.
Matbali, who is also the Chairman of the Malaysian Cocoa Board, said the request for the checkpoint’s closing time extension was made in Parliament, and that the Government recently decided to extend the time from 10pm to midnight.
“We received complaints about visitors being stranded at the Meropok-Sindumin checkpoint.
“With the extended time, visitors from Brunei can enter or exit with more flexibility,” he said.

He added that this is one of the challenges in Spitang, where congestion occurs at the Sabah-Sarawak border, particularly between Sindumin and Merapok, which is the only main access point to Brunei and Indonesia.
He also wants to know the current status of the Pan Borneo Highway as well as the Mendulong-Meligan-Long Pasia road and solar hybrid project which is taking far too long to complete.

“The people have been waiting for far too long for these facilities to be completed,” he said, adding the solar hybrid project should have begun in 2017.
