BEAUFORT: More career programmes will continue to bring job opportunities, especially in the rural area, said Assistant Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Harun Durabi.

He noted that the national unemployment rate decreased to 3.4 per cent in the third quarter of the year, as reported by the Department of Statistics (DOSM).

However, the unemployment rate for Sabah remains at 7.5 per cent, with the number of unemployed reaching 166,300 people in the third quarter of 2023, compared to 165,600 people in the second quarter of the same year.

He hoped the Beaufort Career and Entrepreneurship Carnival would boost career opportunities for locals through interviews.

“The organisation of the event is one of the initiatives by the Human Resource Development Department (JPSM).

“The aim is to provide a platform connecting job seekers, especially youth, with employers or private companies offering job opportunities throughout Malaysia,” he said while officiating the Career Carnival at Dewan Pak Musa.

The Entrepreneurship Carnival brought together local entrepreneurs, including those under the guidance of JPSM, the Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR), and the Federal Agriculture Board (Fama).

The objective is to boost the economy, increase income and elevate the economic status of the people.

“We received very encouraging participation for the carnival this time, with a total of 14 employers from various agencies offering approximately 1,000 job opportunities,” said Harun.

The event involved 16 exhibitors from departments, agencies, TVET institutions, and banking, along with the presence of more than 50 local entrepreneurs.

He hoped the carnival would not only reduce the unemployment rate but also improving the economy of the people, especially those who are poor and severely poor.

Harun said the carnival plays a crucial role in encouraging job seekers to register on the Sabah Jobs Portal (SJP) system, which serves as a medium connecting job seekers with employers offering career opportunities throughout Malaysia.

As of Dec 13, a total of 12,331 job seekers and 424 employers, offering 832 job vacancies, registered on the SJP.

“I hope for continued cooperation from our strategic partners, especially the Social Security Organisation (Socso), to help attract high-profile employers. This collaboration generate interest among the youth to explore the job fields offered,” he said.

Also present were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Ruslan Muharam, Sipitang MP Datuk Matbali Musah, District Officer Mohd Nazri Ajun, Social Security Organisation (Socso) Deputy Director Salwati Abdul Karim, Deputy Director of JPSM Kamsiah Ibrahim, Police Chief Management Department ASP Mohd Ramadzan Siraj Solomon.
