The Society of English Aspiration Sabah has launched a series of artwork competitions for primary school pupils in Sabah called SEAS Giant Book of Manners.

“We call it a Giant Book of Manners because eventually we plan to publish the best drawings,” said KL-hailed lawyer Mazlianie ML, a SEAS Committee member.

“Basically we are running a series of competitions across Sabah,” she said.

“The first one is already done successfully in Membakut and this one held in Dewan Damai Kota Kinabalu on Dec 9 is Series 2.0, we have more coming  up in Ranau, Tawau and Sepangar soon,” said Mazlianie.

“What we do is we invite primary school children, Lower primaries and Upper primaries to create art work and most importantly the caption - the writing about good manners, all in English,” she explained.

“The concept basically is about good manners, and later the winners from all the series of competition, the best drawings will be put in a book and published. That’s why we call it a Giant Book of Manners because all children’s artwork will be published in the Giant Book of Manners by SEAS,” said Mazlianie who flew in specially with her Batik Air/Malindo pilot husband Captain Mohd Ridhzuan to conduct the half day event.

“And these books we hope we can distribute them to schools in Malaysia,” she said.

“Since the objective of SEAS is to improve the English proficiency among students, especially rural pupils in Sabah, everything is in English,” Mazlianie said.

“This is one of the creative methods to encourage English proficiency – drawings with captions.”

Asked how would drawing help to improve English proficiency, Mazlianie said: “Because the format is one side is the drawing, the other side is the caption and captions must be 20 to 100 words or they can do it any other way, like comic strip, as long as they are English words talking about good manners,” Mazlianie elaborated.

Series 2.0 held in Dewan Damai, KK, attracted 62 participants from more than five schools, from as far as SK Bongawan and SK Papar.

“They are not selected by us, we advertised it, published the competition in our official SEAS Facebook page, among teachers, friends, they register and then they come, and all this is the brainchild SEAS founder, Dr Jainab Kassim,” said Mazlianie.

Sponsors for the Series 2.0 competition are Lifred Wong, May Bank and YTL.
