Kota Kinabalu: Lyn Sinsua has grown to accept competition, after participating in various beauty pageants while growing up. Hence she readily decided to take part in the “Miss Global Universe”, when she saw that it also allowed participation of married women.

Although still single, Lyn said the pagent’s message of inclusion appealed to her.

“This pageant came up on my Instagram feed. I am a risk taker and believe if an opportunity arises, you should take it.

“I firmly believe in sharing the stage with others, especially older women. It hit home when I saw that they were making a platform for them.

“Female empowerment, especially in Malaysia, is something every woman should advocate for,” said the law student, 23, who beat over 40 contestants to win.

As a child, she took part in Unduk Ngadau, a Kadazan cultural pageant, and credited with her interest in beauty pageants.

“When I was a kid, my mom and aunt brought me to Unduk Ngadau. So I knew that I wanted to do it once I’m older and won on my third or fourth outing.”

Lyn finds parallels in her law studies and the title [Miss Malaysia Global Universe] because it’s about representation.

“As a lawyer, you represent a client. On a beauty pageant, you represent your state or nation.”

Then there are the requisite of professionalism, confidence, and being articulate.

“Answering the Q&A was an aspect of the competition that I really enjoyed,” she said.

Having won the national title, Lyn is obliged to participate in promoting social causes near to the finalist’s heart.

She cited environmental sustainability as an issue she is committed to advocate, both on the international stage and through volunteering locally.

“Preserving natural resources, reducing our carbon footprint, and making more eco-friendly choices are all things I feel passionate about and want to use my platform to bring attention to.”

Lyn felt lucky to have grown up in a very altruistic family.

She used to volunteer at a Tzu Chi (humanitarian non-governmental organisation) to help separate different types of trash.

The national costume she decided she would wear for the event would reflect Sabah roots.

In the meantime, she is careful with her diet and trying to pack as many workouts as possible.

“I’m most looking forward to networking and meeting people from overseas.”

“It was also rewarding to see everyone come together to root for me. I have good support and that makes me very happy,” she said.
