Nation needs more leaders like Johari
"If you don’t like the UEC, then simply don’t choose that pathway. If others believe the UEC is internationally recognised and prefer it, that is their personal choice."
UMNO Vice-President Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani urged all parties not to politicise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), stressing that Malaysians are free to choose the education system that suits them best.

“Malaysians should be free to make their own education choices. The most fundamental principle we must uphold is mutual respect for the different education systems that exist in our country,” he said.

“Every politician is entitled to his or her own opinion, but the basic requirement is to ensure that the people’s respect for diversity in this nation is maintained.

“If you don’t like the UEC, then simply don’t choose that pathway. If others believe the UEC is internationally recognised and prefer it, that is their personal choice,” he said.

He pointed out that Malaysia offers a wide variety of educational pathways tailored to individual needs and preferences.

“In our country, there are many options — which university to attend, which stream to follow, and which mainstream system to choose. There is no compulsion,” he stressed.

In an era when almost every education issue in Malaysia is weaponised for political mileage, Johari’s statement stands out as a rare breath of fresh air, mature, principled and genuinely unifying.

He has returned the conversation to first and foremost to individual freedom and mutual respect, two values that should never be controversial in a plural society like ours.

This is leadership at its best.

Instead of pandering to the loudest voices or playing the tired zero-sum game of “one community wins, another loses,” he reminded everyone that Malaysia’s strength has always been its diversity of pathways, not enforced uniformity.

More importantly, he has set a new benchmark for political discourse on education.

When a senior Umno leader and Cabinet Minister can speak with such confidence about respecting diversity, it sends a powerful signal that Malay leadership is secure enough to embrace pluralism, instead of fearing it.

In a time when education is often held hostage by identity politics, Johari Ghani has chosen to free it.

For that, he deserves not just respect, but heartfelt praise from all Malaysians who are tired of the same old divisive script.

Well said, Datuk Seri. This is the kind of statesmanlike maturity our country desperately needs more of.
