Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is currently undergoing a major transformation in the energy sector by taking on a more active role as an owner and leader in the oil and gas industry, said Deputy Chief Minister II cum Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.
He said that through SMJ Energy (SMJE), Sabah is accelerating upstream activities, commercialising new energy resource discoveries and ensuring that more of the economic value generated from the State’s resources is retained for the benefit of the people of Sabah.

“Sabah is no longer merely an observer. We are owners, contributors and catalysts shaping the future of the state’s oil and gas industry,” he said at the Welcome Dinner of the Oil & Gas Services and Equipment Conference and Exhibition (OGSE) Sabah 2026 at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Thursday.
Masidi, who is also Chairman of SMJ Energy, said the State Government welcomes the participation of international investors and strategic partners through genuine collaborations involving the sharing of technology, expertise and capital to drive the growth of Sabah’s energy industry.
He said such partnerships are crucial in strengthening the development of the State’s oil and gas sector while creating more economic opportunities for the people.
At the same time, he urged companies involved in the industry to provide opportunities for local vendors, invest in the development of Sabah talent and build long-term partnerships to ensure the benefits of the industry are enjoyed more broadly.
According to him, the organisation of OGSE Sabah 2026 is not merely an exhibition of oil and gas equipment and services, but also reflects the State Government’s commitment to strengthening financial stability, enhancing commercial independence and creating a more robust investment climate in Sabah.
In this regard, Masidi said the State Government remains committed to supporting the growth of the energy sector and ensuring that the achievements attained will deliver lasting benefits to Sabah and its people.
