Couple jailed, fined for abusing boys
The couple
KENINGAU: A couple was on Wednesday jailed a total of six years and six months and fined RM26,000 for abusing two boys under their care, including using an iron on their bodies, last month.

Magistrate Flavian Edward Henry meted out the sentence to the couple – a 36-year-old woman and her 27-year-old lover – who pleaded guilty to the crimes against the boys, aged 13 and five, respectively.

The couple committed the offences between March 24 and March 30, this year, between 4pm and 4.10pm in a rented room at a shoplot in town here. 

The woman and the man faced three charges and two charges, respectively.

Their cases were brought back for mention before Flavian on Wednesday.

The woman was sentenced to two years’ jail and fined RM10,000 or one year’s jail for causing hurt to the 13-year-old with an iron, which was likely to cause death, under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

On the second count, the woman was also handed two years’ jail and fined RM10,000 or one year’s jail for committing similar offence to the younger boy, an offence under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

She was ordered to serve the imprisonment sentences from Wednesday.

The woman, on the third count, was jailed 10 months and fined RM2,000 or six months’ jail for causing hurt to the younger boy, under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, the man was sentenced to 10 months’ jail and fined RM2,000 or six months’ jail on each charge of causing hurt to each of the boys, both framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

He was ordered to serve the imprisonment sentence on the first count from the date of his conviction (Wednesday).

The couple was on Tuesday brought to the court and pleaded guilty to all the charges and that their next mention date was supposed to be on May 17, but brought forward to Wednesday (April 17) after the court received all the documents and reports it needed from the hospital.

Section 324 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years or with fine or with whipping or with any two of such punishments while Section 323 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of up to one year or fined of up to RM2,000, or both, on conviction.

The couple, who were not represented, failed to pay the fine.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Eugenie Meredith Gilbert prosecuted  Previously, Keningau OCPD Supt Yampil Garai said the teenager is the woman’s stepson from her previous marriage, while the younger boy was adopted by the couple later.
