Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s premier five-star resort Shangri-La Tanjung Aru received the prestigious “Asean Green Hotel Award” from Asean Tourism Forum 2024 in Vientiane, Lao PDR – reaffirming the resort’s commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices in the hospitality industry.

The Asean Green Hotel Standard is a leading certification program promoting sustainable tourism and recognising businesses in the hospitality sector for their initiatives in reducing their environmental impact and adopting environmentally conscious practices.

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru General Manager, Conor Hadlington expressed delight at the hotel receiving the award: “We are deeply honoured to have been awarded the Asean Green Hotel Standard.

“Sustainability is becoming a core value for our establishment, and this recognition reflects all the progress we have made.

“We are committed to providing exceptional service while minimising our environmental footprint, and we believe that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand,” he said during a tour of the resort with members of the media.

Shangri-La has taken steps towards becoming more environmentally friendly and has created a beautifully curated herb garden which features a variety of fresh edible herbs and flowers including gingers, pandan, mint, edible flowers, thyme, rosemary, basil, roselle, and lemongrass grown to supply the resort’s kitchens.

The resort has introduced stingless bees which have taken up residence at the herb garden.

Stingless bees produce kelulut honey which is known for its superior antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, free radical scavenging activity, and also possesses pro-healing properties as other kinds of honey.

Meanwhile, young guests and communities can visit the resort’s Clownfish Discovery Centre which provides interactive learning about marine conservation.

Building further on its green credentials, Shangri-La leads the way in adopting the 3Rs of Sustainability (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) through its Food Waste Monitoring System to avoid oversupply of food, and harvesting of rainwater to wash boats.

The resort has set a goal to reduce single-use plastics in their premises by 2025. As a part of this mission, they have eliminated the use of plastic mineral bottles in their Hotel Shop and have implemented a recycling program for paper and plastics.

The resort is taking steps to reduce energy consumption by installing solar-powered lights in the carpark and garden areas, and using LED lights throughout most of the resort to lower energy consumption. Employees and suppliers also receive annual training about the resort’s environmental policies.

The Asean Green Hotel Standard is an Asean initiative dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism practices around Asean.

Asean Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn presented award during the 9 th Asean Tourism Awards ceremony on Jan 26.

Secretary General of the Malaysian Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, Dato’ Roslan Tan Sri Abdul Rahman attended the official announcement and awards ceremony on behalf of Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.
