RANAU: Residents in Kg Lungkidau are urged to be patient while waiting for work on new bridge to replace the damaged one to start soon.

Paginatan Assemblyman who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Abidin Madingkir said the concrete bridge is in the design stage by the Public Works Department (JKR).

“The tender will be issued in May followed by the construction.

Abidin thanked the State Government in particular Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Hajiji Hj Noor for approval for the construction.

Residents in seven villages in the Paginatan area have been appealing for the suspension bridge that was damaged due to flooding in mid-January to be repaired immediately.

The suspension bridge, which is about 100 meters long, needs to be rebuilt or at least repaired for the convenience of the residents every day, including students.

A resident of Kg Lungkidau who wants to be known as Fauziah Ezf said that about 5,000 residents from seven villages namely Kampung Paginatan, Lungkidau, Toporo, Bunakon, Torikon, Soborong and part of Kampung Kigiwit used the suspension bridge to cross the Liwagu River.

She said the suspension bridge became the main route for residents to Pekan Ranau, the Paginatan Health Clinic and for students to go to school, as well as a route to transport agricultural produce after the concrete bridge collapsed a few years ago.

She said, the condition of the suspension bridge which is now tilted is feared may invite danger to users.

“If this bridge is not repaired immediately, it will threaten the lives of users, especially students who pass through it every day to school,” she said.
