LAHAD DATU: The death of a vocational college student, Mohammad Nazmie Aizzat Muhd Narul Azwan, was due to a misunderstanding between him and hostel mates who had accused him of theft, according to police.

District Police Chief, ACP Dr Rohan Shah Ahmad, said the hostel mates believed Nazmie was responsible for the disappearance of RM50 and RM35 from two students.

“The victim was accused of theft and beaten to death by all the suspects.

“We have detained 13 students of the college aged between 16 and 19 to assist in our investigation,” he said.

Police have obtained statements from 12 witnesses, including four hostel wardens, security guard and several students.

Police also carried out urine tests and found all the suspects free from drug abuse.

Also seized were 12 smart phones belonging to the suspects.

“We are waiting for the full report of the post mortem conducted on the victim from the Lahad Datu Hospital Forensic Department to identify the cause of his death,” he added.

On Friday, the 17-year-old biotech student was found lying unconscious on the floor of one of the rooms at the hostel at 6.50am.
