Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Aquatic Sports Association’s (Sasa) swimmers returned with 15 gold, 14 silver and nine bronze medals at the 33rd Selangor Age Group Swimming Championship 2024 held at  the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre recently.

Dayang Sari Abdullah was the toast of the team by winning five golds and one bronze followed by Laura Lee Yen Nie with four golds, two silvers and one bronze.

Other medal winners were Ignacio Wong Hao Zhe (two golds, two silvers), Hannah Wong Ya Ting (two golds, one silver, one bronze), Chu Xin Ying (one gold, two silvers), Tanner Joibi (one gold, one bronze), Alden Wilbern Liew Joon (two silvers, one bronze), Careyna Bulawan Joseph (one bronze),   Jeanna John Fabian (two silvers), Kester Kan Jun You (one bronze), Ng Ze Heng (one silver), Shane Chong Kian Heuang (one bronze), Sharon Voon Xue Ru (one silver, one bronze) and Sophie Yong Wan Fang (one silver).

Sasa president Daniel Lee congratulated the team for their effort and achievement.

“It is an encouraging sign and a good start to the year for the team. It is always wonderful for our swimmers to compete in different meets at other states, and in doing so they can learn from the experience and improve further.

“I would like to thank Selangor Aquatics, our fellow member in Malaysia Aquatics, for their invitation and the hospitality during the championship,” he said.

He was also impressed with the participation of more than 700 in the competition. “To see 700 plus swimmers attending Selangor’s state level championships was an eye opener.

“I hope the general public here in the State would be interested to allow their kids to take up swimming as a life skill through our affiliated clubs.

“This will help them to build a stronger foundation that may eventually lead them into the arena of elite swimming at the state and national level.”

He also extended his note of thanks and appreciation to the Youth and Sport Ministry and Sabah Sport Council (MSN Sabah) for their unwavering support to the association.

Meanwhile, the team that participated in the Selangor meet was led by team manager Mike Yap with  Elvin Chia and Benjamin Lee as coaches, and the other swimmers were Beverly Lai Mei Xi, Chua Yi Ern, Adriel Wan Joseph, Denise Koshy, Eva Coleman Maurice, Gabriella Tsen Baq Yin, Jarrel Joibi, Javier Jimmy Fabian, Jenibelle Jimmy Fabian, Kelvin Hon Lok Chou, Lee Ming Jie, Mia Coleman Maurice and Yong Leong Onn.
