Potential Sukma players identified
Arziz said the number will be reduced and the final list will only be known in March.
Kota Kinabalu: Some 40 players from the just concluded Datin Seri Juliah Salag Cup football carnival have been identified as potential players to represent the State at the Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Kuching this August.

Sabah Football Association’s women football committee chairman Muhd Arziz Afizy Rumsani said the number will be reduced and the final list will only be known in March.

“The tournament has served its purpose to select players for the State team and we have so far identified 40 of them.

“We have earlier also identified some from the Sabah Games last year in addition to seven to eight senior players who are still eligible to play in Sukma this year.

“We are likely to make the official announcement on the final list of players only in March after the selection process which is scheduled to be held in February,” he said after the closing ceremony of the Datin Juliah Sulag Cup football carnival on Sunday.

He also said they are ready for the biennial games featuring women football event for the first time but he was unable to disclose the coaching team.

“We are all ready for the challenge ahead in Sukma. The training should begin in April at the Sukma field once we have the final list of players and we are likely to arrange some friendly matches with the senior team.

“However, no confirmation on the coaches yet, but there is definitely a list of names for us to consider before making the final decision in time to prepare the team for the games in August,” he added.

Meanwhile Arziz, who was also the organising chairman, was glad to see the tournament was successfully held and is confident the next edition will be much better organised.

“I am very pleased that everything went smoothly until the end, and our mission of searching for new talents to be absorbed into the State and Sukma team was also accomplished.

“This is just the start and some of the teams may not have enough time to prepare but I believe the next tournament will be much more competitive as all the teams will be able to prepare early,” he said.

He expressed his gratitude to Sabah Football Association (Safa) president Datuk Shahelmey Yayah for his trust in the women football committee to organise the competition and also thanked Jetama Sdn Bhd and other sponsors for their support.
