Karatekas return with 33 medals

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Shitoryu Karate Association contingent (Shitoryu Sabah) brought home 33 medals in conjunction with the East Malaysia Zone Shitoryu Karate Championship 2023 (EMZSK20-23) at Permy Mall Miri, Sarawak, on Sunday.

The squad from the 17 competing teams brought home six gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze medals by placing third in the entire event which was held for two days over the weekend.

Team Representative Officer and Shitoryu Sabah President, Gesiri Gambung said he was satisfied and happy with the overall results obtained.

“Through this sports tournament (karate), it gives us the opportunity to build a very good relationship between athletes, parents and coaches when we walk side by side like a big family in Shitoryu Sabah.

“In fact, our athletes also showed discipline and high spirit and I consider it a first step for a long journey before we will come back stronger at next year’s tournament,” he said when met on Tuesday.

According to Gesiri, they are committed to the development phase of Shitoryu Sabah athletes and hope to achieve the target by producing the best performing athletes within two years.

“Thank you to the organisers of EMZSK20-23, Shitoryu Miri for their warm hospitality and the athletes’ parents and supporters for their unconditional support and motivation,” he said.

Among the list of Shitoryu Sabah gold medal winners are Muhammad Dayyan (Kata Male 8-9 years), Inara Nadeera (Kumite Female 7 years and under), Hans Joseph J. (Kumite Male 10-11 years), Jacquiline Jean L. (Kumite Girls 12-13 years), McRoyce Donovan (Senior Men’s Kumite -75kg) and Tomre Howell (Senior Men’s Kumite -84kg).

Meanwhile, the silver medals were obtained from Inara Nadeera (Kata Female 7 years and under), Inas Naaila (Kata Female 8-9 years old), Nur Alya Ajla (Kata Female 12-13 years old), Sylisaac Immanuel S. (Kata Male 8 -9 years old) and Deo Clarence T. (Kata Male 12-13 years old).

Charity Bea G. (Kumite Girls 7 years and under), Haylen Joelle Z. (Kumite Girls 8-9 years), Lisa Mahrain B. (Kumite Girls 10-11 years), Elyseo Gabriel. (Men’s Kumite 12-13 years old), Claire Via (Women’s Senior Kumite -55kg) and Primus Sunning (Veteran Men’s Kumite).

As for the bronze medal, they were won by Reavelle Adelaide (Kata Female 10-11 years old), Luxorius L. (Kata Male 8-9 years old), Edzmyzra Iman (Kata Male 8-9 years old), Hans Joseph J. (Kata Male 10-11 years old), Hyeonzye H. (Kumite Girls 10-11 years old), Sylisaac Immanuel S. (Kumite Boys 9 years old), Grebradley Bryan G. (Kumite Boys 12-13 years old) and Jessyline Jane L. (Kumite Girls 12-13 years).

Larresca Jayne H. (Women’s Kata & Kumite), Gregory Benn G. (Male Cadet Kata), Joali B. (Women’s Senior Kumite +61kg) and Oswald M. (Men’s Senior Kumite -55kg).

Bronze medals won in additional events were Women’s Team Kata (Donovee, lqma Nadzureen, Reavelle Adelaide), Men’s Team Kata (Grebradley Bryan, Gregory Benn, Keywell) and Mixed Team Kumite (Thiery, Lea Jayne, McRoyce, Joali, Tomre).

The contingent was represented by 45 athletes and was joined by more than 30 parents and supporters.

Also accompanying were the Team Managers, Kyoshi Thomas Chong and Jesyntha Chong, Team Trainers Malcom Marwill and McRoyce Donoval Dagul and the appointed Team Physio, Sufie Kudien.

The referees representing Shitoryu Sabah were Renshi John Jikum, Sensei Thomas Olin and Sensei Primus Sunning.
