SIPITANG: Parents and teachers have a responsibility to ensure that students sit for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations and succeed.

Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusob Yacob said education is a life-changing tool that can bring them out of poverty.

“However, statistics show that out of the 40,147 that registered for the 2022 SPM exams in Sabah, only 34,461 sat for it. In Sipitang, out of 468 who registered, only 19 showed up and this is very sad.”

He said this when officiating at a donation handing over ceremony for Higher Education students as well as presentation of Parent Teacher Association (PIBG) Management Funds at Sipitang Multipurpose Hall, here, recently.

“As a leader in Sipitang, I want all parents to focus on education. We have to change the way we think starting at home. Use positive words. Whisper ambition into the children’s ears from their early childhood.

“Make sure the children go to school well-nourished and as parents, be an example to the children and, more importantly, emulate the practices of successful people, namely discipline, effort and self-integrity,” he said.

Yusof also presented other forms of government education aid, including the Bisbah aid – a computer equipment assistance and teaching assistance to schools.

He distributed financial aid from his Assemblyman provisions to a total of 230 Sipitang students who are pursuing higher learning, as well as 29 PIBGs in the district. Each student received RM300 while each PIBG received RM1,000.

He hoped that the donation could ease the financial burden of students who just enrolled in Higher Learning Institutes (IPT) and help PIBGs plan and implement programmes towards student excellence.

Also present were Sipitang District Police Chief DSP Mail Sundongi, Sipitang District Deputy Education Officer Adnan Othman and Community Development Leader Wandey Agung Baruh.
